Opponents of the Washington Academic Middle School (WAMS) tennis team have been feeling the "love" of the game as the 2009-10 season is proving to be a season of all wins.
Both the boys and the girl's teams are undefeated half way through the season.
On Monday, WAMS boys played against Rio Vista Middle School and came away with another win which makes the team 5-0 in Central Valley Athletic League (CVAL) play.
Singles player Robert Cardinas is 5-0. Tystan Chester is 4-0 while Conner Bennent is 4-1.
Boys first doubles team of Chris Neal and Tou Lou Vang are 5-0 while second doubles team Cooper Short and Sammy Castillo are also 5-0.
There are a total of 13 players on the team. The remaining players are - Philemon Yang, Edward Estrada, Aven Ault and Loto Lealaimatafao.
The WAMS Boys Tennis Coach Michael Marino is a first year teacher at WAMS and a first year coach for tennis.
Marino teaches seventh grade World History. Marino played number one singles tennis in high school at Granite Hills High School.
Marino had this to say about this year's boys tennis team, “The team has been largely successful because of the hard work the players put in everyday in practice. Many members of the team practice on Saturday on their own at Sanger High to improve their game.”
The Girls team also played Rio Vista on Monday and also came away with another win which makes them 5-0 in CVAL league play too. There is one difference between the boys and the girls team.
All the girls on the team are undefeated. Girls Singles player Juliana Sanchez is 5-0, Alyssa Honore is 5-0 and Alexandra Kokka is also 5-0. The girls team has two doubles teams. First doubles team of Samantha Rodriguez and Ashley Rodriguez are 5-0 and second doubles team of Yulema Palma and Xena Senn are also 5-0.
The girls team consists of 13 players. The team roster finishes out with Haley Morrow, Martina Saucedo, Laura Eugenio, Jennifer Pena, Summer Hurt and Taylor Rodriguez.
The Girls team is coached by first time coach Nikkie Ranu.
Ranu is not new to Sanger. Ranu has been playing tennis since she was four years old. Ranu played for WAMS and played Varsity tennis for Sanger High all four years that she attended the campus.
Ranu said that "Coaching was always something I had said I wanted to do at some point. I'm so glad I did it because it has definitely been a learning experience and I have been able to meet a great group of young ladies." As for the rest of the season, Ranu thinks the girl's team has a good chance of winning the whole league but never wants the team to get too ahead of themselves.
WAMS tennis teams play on Mondays and Wednesdays, while practices are always on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
